Afghan Dust Storm

Friday afternoon, shortly before we set out for the reservoir, the sky disappeared. It became hazy and brown. Our friends explained that it's dust coming up from Afghanistan. It didn't take long to feel it in your throat. But the bright side is that the temperature dropped into the 90's. It actually felt cool!

Friday night our friends got a sitter for all the kids, and we went to an Arabic restaurant with friends new and old. To my absolute delight, the food was outrageously good. We had falafel, hummus, eggplant, salads, fish, chicken and beef. I'm still thinking about it.

Today Zack went to kids club and the girls, our driver and I ventured out in search of fabric. Our first stop was a store with only fabrics from Dubai. We kept going. Finally at a store near the green bazaar we found what we needed. Each girl chose fabric to have a dress made. I finally chose a traditional pattern as well. Before we left we noticed girls' traditional dresses, already made, so now Erika and Hannah are dressed like little Tajik girls. Adorable. I was instructed to soak the fabric we bought for 2 hours in cold water, then hang to dry in the shade. (I'm soaking it in clean water from my distiller). I'll take it tomorrow to the 4th floor above the Pierre Cardin store (of all things) to find a seamstress named Sohiba. Hopefully then, one week from now, the girls in our family will all have new Tajik dresses (long, colorful ones with pants underneath.) I will definitely post a photo of that!
